Lost City Radio

Published by admin on May 23rd, 2009 - in Alternative, L.A. Bands, Pop, Punk, Rock, unsigned

Lost City Radio played The Cat Club in Hollywood last Saturday. LCR is among a handful of bands that’s morphing the Sunset Strip rock scene into a more contemporary indie sound, unlike the hairspray and spandex laden bands from days of yore. Since most of the guys in LCR went to school or grew up in New York, I took the opportunity to ask them how they’d compare the indie scene there to what they discovered after moving to Los Angeles. Some great answers in the short interview sections of the video below.

Highlight Bomb

Tacoma, Washington based Highlight Bomb played a set in Los Angeles last Saturday. The group cranks out a pop-laced grunge and is currently touring much of the West. The gig was low in attendance due in large part to the band playing at around 5 o’clock in the afternoon.  I spoke with all three members of the group about the difference between the Northwest music scene and other areas of the country, most notably Los Angeles. Peter Salett

Peter Salett

Singer/songwriter Peter Salett held a record release party at M Bar in Hollywood on July 17 for his upcoming album In the Ocean of the Stars.  His music has been featured in films such as Judd Apatow’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall, HBO’s Cat Dancers and Down in the Valley starring Ed Norton. On the new album, Salett retains his characteristic folk-country style, but tunes such as True in Time and Miss You are unique in their early 50s/60s pop rhythms and echo-heavy slide guitar. Both tracks are highly recommended downloads, or if you live in NYC, you can pick up a copy of the entire CD when Salett performs at The Living Room on July 23. The video below features highlights from the gig in Hollywood last Thursday, including guest appearances by actor/comedian Thomas Lennon and filmmaker David Wain.

Aaron David Gleason

Gleason and MooreAaron David Gleason played an acoustic set at the Room 5 Lounge in February, and I had the pleasure of watching him perform with guitarist Dean Moore. Gleason is an artist with Adrenaline Music Group, and his recorded material is a blend of electronica, blues, pop, and an occasional backbeat of Latin rhythm. Even in his acoustic sets, Gleason steers the listener on unexpected turns, with minor chord progressions just when you think a song may develop into a bluesy anthem. Recommended is a tune called Mastermind, which can be found on iTunes along with Gleason’s self-titled EP.

There’s two live clips in the video below, one of Gleason and the second featuring Moore, who also sports some decent chops on vocals. Both provided the most eccentric and more comical answers I’ve received from bands so far. Check it out:
