Hello My Name is Red

An alternative title for this post could be “Masked Men Rock Downtown Alley.” Seeing a band like Hello My Name is Red reminds me why I write an indie music blog. Just down the alley from The Vivian Girls show at The Smell last Saturday, three guys wheeled up in a black SUV, hooked up their amps to a car battery, and kicked more ass in a few songs than a lot of bands could in a two hour set. The band does an accurate job describing its sound on their MySpace page as “loud, catchy, bouncy, sloppy, soothing sounds.” The outside venue didn’t provide the best lighting conditions unfortunately, but the video below provides a taste of the sweet acid these guys serve up. Short interview with the lead singer about halfway through.

Audacity

A little shakey camera work at the beginning of this video due to a very active crowd at The Smell on July 17, but I managed to get things under control a few seconds in. Orange County band Audacity played a hot set (literally) to a full house that night. They’ve been together for about 8 years, which means (doing some quick math) these guys have been jamming since 7th grade. I’m really not sure how old they are, but I do know they kick serious ass on stage and write tunes with great hooks as well. There’s a short interview with the lead singer about halfway through the vid. Good crowd scenes too (when I was a safe distance away). Check it out.

The Christopher Walk-ins

I’ve been trying to catch up with The Christopher Walk-ins for a couple of months now, and I finally did on June 5, when they played a show as part of Weatherground’s residency at Second Street Jazz (and no, neither band plays jazz). The energy that The Walk-ins fuse to their catchy, melodic tunes is very much present in their live show. There was a sizeable crowd at the downtown gig, so you may want to catch these guys while they still play smaller venues. Below are stage clips spliced with short interviews with the band, in which lead singer Leonard Tucker provides some of the more eccentric answers I’ve heard about how to change the indie music scene. Weatherground (re-edit)

I wasn’t happy with the sound and video quality captured at Weatherground’s show back in March, so the band let me grab new footage while they played a gig at The Airliner last month. The video below includes those shots and the interview from the original post.

Lost City Radio

Lost City Radio played The Cat Club in Hollywood last Saturday. LCR is among a handful of bands that’s morphing the Sunset Strip rock scene into a more contemporary indie sound, unlike the hairspray and spandex laden bands from days of yore. Since most of the guys in LCR went to school or grew up in New York, I took the opportunity to ask them how they’d compare the indie scene there to what they discovered after moving to Los Angeles. Some great answers in the short interview sections of the video below.
